Aesop Fable: The Wolf and the Crane 620 x 320 x 80mm.

A wolf is choking on a bone. A crane offers to remove it in return for a favour. After saving the wolf the crane asks for his reward. The wolf replies: 'Your head was in my mouth and you are still in one piece. That is my reward.'

Two-sided carving

This carving was largely done over two days in the summer of 2022 for The City and Guild of London Art School carving competition. I was awarded First Prize for woodcarving (The Dick Onians Prize) and shared the Carvers' Choice prize with the fabulous Chris Nayler and his wolf in sheep's clothing. I did spend quite a few hours finishing it off after the event.

The Phoenix spots Dr Wren

In summer 2023 we were given 12 hours over two days to carve our choice of subject related to Sir Christopher Wren. We discovered the dimensions of the wood (250mm x 450 x 75) 10 days before the event so we could model our design. My design shows London burning (from S. of the river overlooking Southwark) and a Phoenix rising from the smoke, about to accost a curious Dr Wren. I was again awarded First Prize for woodcarving (The Dick Onians Prize), which was thrilling given the competition!
