This is an amalgam of a practice design from a group workshop led by Mike Painter for The Woodcarvers Association in Gloucestershire in August 2023 and an element drawn from Meyer's Handbook of Ornament plate 24.2. I wanted to capture the physical weight of the leaf and see how to make the leaf ends flip.
The Worshipful Company of Ceilers and Joiners run an annual competition. Competitors have from 8am until 5.30pm (with a 30 minute break for lunch) to carve a decorative design. I was proud to be awarded 1st Prize in the 2023 Competition on April 22nd. This is the design we were asked to carve.
I spent a couple of hours after the competition finishing the pine-cones.
This pair of scrolls could be used to hold up a shelf . Originally this type of carving was used to support and decorate an elaborate ceiling/roof structure.
Yellow pine is very soft and so the chisels need to be extra sharp.
This deep relief in lime is one of the first exercises on the City & Guilds woodcarving course.
