Misericords often have a central motif plus a pair of matching 'supporters' to either side. I used an old oak step to carve a misericord in full. The Wyvern (two legged dragon) which forms the centrepiece of my misericord is a copy of a supporter from a misericord in Lincoln cathedral.
The birds to either side of the Wyvern on my old oak misericord are modelled on supporters from St Laurence's Church, Ludlow. The originals are stunningly crisp and characterful. My copies are a bit smaller and I had to navigate some tricky knots in the wood.
